5. Development of artificial blood-substitutes

In order to eliminate reliance on blood donors, as well as the risk of infectious disease transmission and blood-type rejection, development of artificial blood-substitutes (ABS) is essential. We are trying to design myoglobin-based ABS through functional manipulation of the protein using protein engineering and chemical modification of heme cofactors, which allows easy handling and long-term storage.
