Research Interests

 

TS has taken an interest in the synthesis of novel organic-inorganic compounds containing heavier main group elements from the viewpoint of fundamental chemistry and material sciences.
There are three current projects as follows:
1) Creation of a transition-free C-C coupling catalyst with utilizing unique characters of heavier main group elements: low-coordinated species of hervier main group elements. "small molecules activation"
2) Synthesis of novel d-π conjugated systems containing double-bonds between heavier main group elements (π electron units) and ferrocenyl group (d electron unit). "stable multistep redox systmes"
3) Creation of unique stimuli responsive species of heavier main group elements. "unique, strange compounds".

"Main Group Element Chemistry"
What will happen, when a compound in the organic chemistry of second-row elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen is replaced with those in heavier main-group-element chemistry such as silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur? 
The properties of the compound substituted in this way will be investigated in detail for the purpose of:
"Clarification of differences between organic compounds and heavier main-group-elements"
"Clarification of intrinsic properties of each element"
"Exploring new functions and physical properties that utilize the characteristics of main-group-elements"
 
Particularly, the unsaturated compounds of heavier main group elements are known to be difficult to isolate because of their lability due to their extremely high reactivity. That is, "unprecedented functions" could be hidden in such fascinating species of heavier main group elements.  

"Creation of Novel Main Group Element Catalysis / Novel Functional Compounds of Main Group Element"
For example, the "cross-coupling reactions", which enables efficient connection of different carbon compounds, are of great importance in organic chemistry. However, such efficient coupling reactions mostly require "transition metal" catalysts such as palladium and rhodium. We are working on the development of new small-molecule-activation/transformatation reactions reactions, with utilizing "heavier main group elements" as a catalyst instead of precious transition metals.
If we can develop a catalyst that can be applied to synthetic organic chemistry  using abundant elements such as silicon and aluminum, we will not have to worry about element depletion in the future, and we believe that we can solve "the element resource problem".
